Dear Barbara:  After suffering a serious back injury and a couple of surgeries, I was pretty much unable to walk, sit or stand without pain.  My surgeons, physical therapists, nurses and most importantly, my partner told me to consider pilates as a way to strengthen my core. I was introduced to Pilates through my daughter who wanted to get her body back after having two children. I was never interested in pilates or yoga, as I am not a flexible person.  But I joined Barbara’s classes because I thought it would be fun to do something with my daughter without the kids around.  What I found was pilates has changed me for the better. Barbara never cared that I wasn’t “bendy”, she encouraged me to keep trying and is always cheering me on. I look forward to going to class each week, and believe me, I never would have thought I would look forward to working out. I can not say enough good things about Barbara and Forever Fit Pilates!  I found Barbara after injuring my neck and wanting a way to get my post-baby body into shape without putting strain on my herniated discs.  Working with Barbara has not only gotten me into fantastic shape, where people at work have asked numerous times if I had lost weight, but it was also great rehab for my neck.  Barbara really knows my body and will give me alternative moves when she knows an exercise will bother my neck.  Pilates has really changed my body, and I owe it all to Barbara! Who likes to go for class with so many people and has just one Instructor?  I broke my shoulder and I have bad Knees. Everyone was telling me to go to Pilates Class. I decided to participate in Pilates Class at the good Gym in Garden City.  The classes were so crowded that the Instructor couldn’t give attention to everyone even she wants to.  Then you do wrong exercise and get worst.  Friend of mine told me about Forever Fit Pilates, LLC in Massapequa. My first impression about the Instructor Barbara Pantino when she interviewed me was the most excited experience. She gave me some instruction before the class start about how to breathe and some vocabularies that I didn’t know before.   Well everyone has different needs.  She is warm and loves what she does. Wow, was I surprised. I never thought I could really like and enjoy doing exercises like I do today. Although I am relatively new to Pilates, I found it to be energizing while at the same time I felt calm and centered. Basically I am lazy when it comes to exercising. I have tried many things and then lose interest. At the recommendation of a friend I decided to give Pilates a try. I started taking Barbara's classes in January, and I can honestly say that at first I had no idea what I was doing but after a couple of months of taking the class twice a week I felt very comfortable and noticed a change in the way I felt.  I always have had a difficult time of standing straight and my posture seems to be getting better and better.  I also seem to be more flexible and agile.  I am so enjoying these classes and mostly importantly Barbara realizes that everyone is on a different level and she has extreme patience with all of us.  I look forward to each class as every class is different which makes it so much fun.  Harriet Teitle - East Meadow, NY

All my life I've been in tune to the need and discipline of consistent physical activity. A Catalyst for Change


Last year I walked into the law firm where I worked as an attorney, handed in my notice and walked out the door.  Why did I do this?  Well, it all started with Pilates.

I had been practicing law in the Real Estate area for 12 years.  It was incredibly stressful with insane market highs and lows, and everything was always rush, rush, rush.  When the economy finally "crashed" a year or so ago, the industry got desperate and quite nasty.  On top of that I was simultaneously dealing with a breast cancer scare which made me realize that I really hadn't exercised-at all-in over 2 years.  I made a decision to start to do something healthy.

I found Pilates completely by accident-I actually thought I was going to a yoga studio.  But I decided to try it and absolutely loved it.  The exercises really made me feel more flexible and agile.  But more than that I felt energized and revitalized.  In fact, I felt...good.  At 53 years old it dawned on me that I hadn't felt this good in a long time.  This led to some major changes in my life.  It was here that I decided I was done as an attorney-I just didn't need the anxiety anymore.  When I left, it was a mixture of elation and dread.  I left on a Friday, and had to have another surgery on Monday.  So while I was thrilled to be turning my back on the industry, I was afraid for my health.

Luckily everything turned out all right.  My surgery and recovery went well and I decided to focus on doing something I loved-photography-particularly child photography.  Having eight grandchildren arrive over the years elevated me from "amateur" photographer to "enthusiast."  But I wanted to learn more so I got a job at a local photo studio to learn the "ins and outs."  The training was completely hands-on and gave me the opportunity to learn as much as possible in one year about digital photography and photographing children (plus an occasional dog).

I worked at the photo studio for nearly a year before taking a temporary six month work contract in the mortgage industry to help pay bills.  But it gave me the knowledge I needed and it is my goal to open my own studio in the upcoming years. In addition, my grandkids are competing in a triathlon relay in a few months - one is a swimmer and one is a runner.  But they need a cyclist for that leg of the race.  Guess what?  That cyclist is going to be me.  I'm in training right now and Pilates is a major part of my conditioning program.

I think doing Pilates at the time of this decision really helped me develop this "I can do it" attitude.  So, why not start training, spinning and riding at age 54.  The first few weeks on the stationery bike left me in tears, but with my Pilates instructor Barbara's encouragement and my absolute refusal to disappoint my grandchildren, I had the incentive not to quit.  Ten months later, I've built up to 28 mile rides and don't even get winded!  Maureen Febbraro - Massapequa, New York

Barbara is awesome. She's a natural teacher. Her directions are clear and if you're having trouble or you're not doing something correctly, Barbara has your back. You'll hear her gentle cues, "chris-chin down" or "straighten your legs". She makes sure that everyone in her classes has proper form which is so important. I’ve always been an athlete and I’m in fairly good shape. But I work a ton of crazy hours as a interior designer, and the day-to-day routine doesn't allow for me to work out as much as I used to . I need to get the most out of the time I do find to work out. Pilates has done that for me.  I had always wanted to try Pilates and there is a studio by my office. So one day I saw an ad in my local paper for Forever Fit Pilates Studio and I called up and set up my first private session with Barbara Pantino. I have been training with her ever since.Physically I feel great I have more energy. I am more toned and look leaner than I ever did when I went to the gym. I am only 5’4” but I look a little taller now and I am way more flexible. And it really is a mind and body exercise - it makes me feel more alert and focused. I also never seem to get bored as Barbara always finds new ways to challenge me when we train. I do both private and group sessions. With this economy I have had to cut back a lot of my extras these days, but Pilates is one thing I will not give up. It keeps me fit, happy and energized. Once you hit 40 it is harder and harder to keep the weight off and feel good about your body. This does it for me. If you haven’t tried Pilates I say go for it. It will boost your energy and when you feel and look good it will also boost your self esteem. You have nothing to lose - at least try one session and you'll know if its for you. I've always found most traditional exercises uninteresting and not particulary productive.  But as we grow older we do need to stay in shaped.  I heard about through a friend who attended the same gym, so I decided to try a Pilates class, and I was hooked!  Eventually I began individual sessions with my instructor, Barbara Pantino and have been with her ever since (five years!).  Pilates is truly the only exercise I enjoy-- it has made a profound difference in my life.  I've even created my own Pilates studio in my home, complete with a Reformer and Cadillac.

From a mental standpoint I am more relaxed and less stressed. Pilates has a Zen quality to it that’s hard to explain but it has made me made so much more aware of how my body works. And that awareness extends beyond the actual exercise to my whole life. The peace that I find helps me deal with my life and its ups and downs and the body awareness helps me to move more joyfully and more safely. I always say that after a Pilates session, I feel like I’ve had a massage, good exercise, and some therapy. My physical well being has soared. I am sixty five years old, and in better shape than I have ever been. Several years ago, I broke my shoulder about three months before a planned "dream" trip to Africa (I had a crush on Wild Kingdom’s Marlin Perkins from about age ten). I was so afraid that I wouldn’t be able to go, but with physical therapy and gentle Pilates work with Barbara, I was able to make the trip. Recently a degenerative disc in my back led to a weakness in my hip flexor, resulting in pain which made it difficult to climb stairs and to sleep through the night. After working with Barbara and a chiropractor I am pain free, and the weakness is gone. I think everyone is concerned about decreased physical mobility as we age. Pilates has banished that concern for me because I know that for any physical issues that might arise, there is an exercise that I can do to strengthen my body and alleviate any pain or stress. I would encourage anyone at any age to try Pilates. The physical, mental, emotional, and psychological benefits are extraordinary. Because the exercises are so varied and able to be modified for any level of fitness, Pilates never gets old or boring. There are always new ways to modify a particular exercise in order to challenge yourself and your body or to account for a physical issue that needs to be addressed.  Mary Lambert - Merrick, NY

 

I have been taking Pilates classes with Barbara for the past year. Her classes are small and she provides a great deal of individual guidance with clear direction. Barbara is very well educated in the Pilates and continues to study, learn and train other teachers.  I have osteoarthritis in my fingers, toes, knees and a hip which has been surgically replaced---also a pinched nerve in my neck and lumbar spine. I sound like a mess, don't I? But during this year my body has come into alignment, relieving the stress on my joints and giving me more flexibility and without pain. I love the classes.  I think you are a really good teacher; you stay on top of your game  and on top of your students.  You make the classes fun. As you well know I have herniated disc problems and since I started pilates 7 months ago I have not taken a pill killer.  I feel about 75 percent better.  I do two classes a week and would highly recommend to anyone with disc problems to consider Pilates. My name is Dina and I am 36 years old. I am a registered nurse and very interested in physical fitness. I was recently a member of a gym and I was taking some pilates classes. I joined pilates to lessen the stress I accumulate throughout my week. My friend had taken the class and raved about how much it helped her, so naturally I was curious to see what was so amazing.  At first, there wasn't an opening, due to the popularity of this class.  I was fortunate enough to get a call from Barbara that there was an opening in her Spring Session.  Since that first class, I felt relaxed, and comfortable with my body.  I now am in my second session with Barbara, and I can't wait for the fall session to continue working toward releasing stress from my body from a long week. I would like to let women who have NEVER taken pilates or ANY other exercise class know that there is someone out there who wants to help you have a pleasant experience as a beginner in pilates.  I didn't know quite how I felt about this class at first; I wasn't anxious to do any type of exercise; I had no idea what pilates entailed, how it is done, what it should accomplish.  My first session this past spring was in a class of women who had been with Barbara or doing some form of exercise for a long time.  I was out of my element for sure.  Barbara never made me feel uncomfortable and I actually tried some things I never would have thought I could even attempt but little by little, I'm beginning to catch on (or so I think!)  So would I recommend Forever Fit Pilates - YES - we all need some form of exercise and why not do that for yourself with someone very willing to help you keep yourself healthy - Thank you Barbara!

"I was under a tremendous amount of stress last September, from both a high pressure job and medical issues for myself and my husband. One day, I decided I was going to find a Yoga class for the sole purpose of relieving some of the stress in my life. I searched the Internet and found 3 local "Yoga" studios. After visiting the first 2, I stopped at a private studio, knocked on the door, and after a moment of confusion in which Barbara said, "I'm a Pilates instructor, not a Yoga instructor, but come in anyway," my fate was sealed. The Fall session had already started and I missed the first class, but I came back that evening for the second class and was amazed at how I felt. The stresses of the day just fell away. Not having exercised on a regular basis for many years, I thought I would never be able to keep up with the rest of the small class, but Barbara's individual attention and soothing manner ("this is not a competition") made me feel very comfortable even though I was a little bit clumsy. At this stage, I've experienced only 7 of Barbara's Pilates classes, but it's become an important part of my life. I sleep very soundly and feel much stronger after only a short period of time. I have always been an athelete but life had gotten crazy as it does and I forgot to find time for me.. I was feeling out of shape and needed someone to push me in the right direction. That person was you . I made the first move by calling you and starting private pilates sessions back in late June . But your passion, knowledge and support has made we want to continue. The key is not lifting a lot of weights or doing to many sets, it is about controlling the sets you do and getting the most out of each movement. Thank you so much for having me pursue my hip pain with several doctors.  You knew it was more.  It turned out it is not a pulled muscle in both hips but my last doctor found the degeneration in both hips and I will need two total hip replacements.  I need to lose 50 pounds prior to surgery and I'm on my way to that.  I'm looking at an early winter surgery and will go to a rehab center to get me walking again.  I look forward to working with you again thereafter.  Thank you again and be well till then.

5/18/07 -" I've had the opportunity to observe a CardioFitness Infused Pilates class in session, from start to finish.  I've found it to be a fantastic way to not only stretch and tone the body, but the Cardiovascular work is wonderful.  During the aging process the heart needs to be worked, starting out slowly and then increasing the intensity to the beneficial level to keep the heart strong.  Staying within the "training zone" does just that for Cardiovascular and muscular endurance while keeping the work safe.  Including the mandatory heartrate monitor is what I believe, the first time it has been suggested.   You know your stuff.  Hats off Barbara, you've created an awesome program!  And I'm very proud.  That's my Mom!"

"In 2005, I first heard about Pilates.  I saw it on TV and read about how celebrities and fitness gurus raved about how Pilates has drastically improved their appearances and overall sense of well being.  I knew my gym was starting to offer Pilates classes, so I said to myself, "why not try it" and took my 1st Pilates class.  The first few classes that I took, which were taught by Barbara Pantino, were awesome.  I couldn't believe how one hour of exercise went by so quickly and effortlessly.  I honestly didn't think I was really "working out" because I didn't feel tired and fatigued.  The following day after a class, my muscles would be sore, especially the muscles I have never felt before.  That's when I knew that Pilates was the thing for me.  I felt better mentally and physically; tension in my neck and shoulders would go away after I did Pilates.  I often compare the feeling to getting a massage.  That's how good I feel after I take a class.  I was becoming addicted to it.  Eventally, Barbara stopped instructing at the gym to start her personal training at her private studio.  I took classes taught by other instructors and I bought Pilates tape for use at home.  I can say that I truly missed taking Pilates with Barbara.  There is something about her classes that are so much better than other classes I've taken.  Honest to God.  I feel, and I know that I get a better workout with Barbara.  She really pushes you and keeps it moving which is what I love!  I was really glad when Barbara started teaching group classes again.  It is my favorite way to exercise and I love the "zen" surroundings of her studio.  I have seen such a difference in my body since I started doing Pilates.  It's amazing because before I did Pilates, I worked out with weights, kickboxing, etc.  Since 2005, my body is toned and I feel so much better.  And I've lost fat!  I love it when someone tells me how "ripped" I look!  I love Pilates!  And I love Barbara for teaching me! You're probably feeling me today, specifically your core (back, sides, belly), and most likely your shoulders and neck.  It should be a good sore.  Don't let the soreness discourage you.  It's a good thing!  Means you worked!  As you progress in the classes, the soreness will not be as intense and eventually will stop.  Your shoulders and neck will take more work as you learn to get out of them.  And it will happen, your posture will improve with continued work and you'll leave each class feeling revived and stretched.  A sense of wellbeing as well.  See you next week!
